St Aubyns wins Public Speaking Competition

Impressive performance from the St Aubyns team wins trophy Friday 27 January 2012

On Thursday 26th January St Aubyns hosted for its third year a Public Speaking Competition for local independent schools. This is open to teams of Year 7 and 8 pupils. Illness led to a couple of schools pulling out at the last minute so that only four schools gathered to deliver their speeches - Brighton College Prep School, Roedean, Brighton and Hove High School and St Aubyns.

The victorious St Aubyns team

The range of topics chosen covered the banning of violent video games (argued for by St Aubyns and against by BHHS), closer ties with Europe (opposed by Brighton College Prep School) and compulsory History at GCSE (advocatd by Roedean). All of the competitors were praised by the judges (Father Martin Morgan, Vicar of Rottingdean, and Mr John Tuson, Deputy Head of St Bede's) for their confidence in delivery and expression of opinions. Excellent use of illustration and humour abounded and an informal debate (chaired by St Aubyns pupil, Eric Swinn-Ward) while the judges reached their verdict showed the versatility of the participants in defending their positions.

The final result was:

3rd Roedean

2nd Brighton and Hove High School

1st St Aubyns

Well done to Freddie, George and Wilkie for impressive performances and for all of the hard work they have put in over the last couple of weeks in preparing their speeches.
