2012 General Knowledge Quiz, Years 3 to 6
Who knew? Friday 20 January 2012 The first day of term saw pupils in Years 3 to 6 brimming with information – some familiar, some newly acquired – and ready to tackle this year’s General Knowledge Quiz.
Given 50 questions at the end of last term, the children showed how proficient they are at finding and memorising facts as diverse as Britain’s highest peak - and which culinary delight might be confused with a citrus dairy product!
Once again, there were near-perfect scores to go with some particularly challenging questions. The ‘sporting champion’ who opened the new Pre-Prep building (now the Nursery) was a tricky one, with full marks for Party Politics, the Grand National-winning racehorse, but half if only his trainer, Nick Gaselee, was given. Similarly, a distinction between 'the Great Lakes' and 'the African Great Lakes' was also (ultimately) involved in the awarding of marks for the question about Burton and Speke's expedition in 1856. Oh, Wikipedia - and question setters - be careful how you word these things!
In Year 6 it proved impossible to separate Suki and Boden, both scoring 49, and in Year 3 and 4, just half a mark separated Audrey and Ben, who scored 49.5 – achingly close the maximum! We were particularly pleased to see the increased number of children gaining 40 and above this year, and look forward to a continuing, upward trend in 2013.
The winners for each year group were as follows:
Year 3 Audrey
Year 4 Ben S (Overall Winner for Years 3 and 4)
Year 5 Oscar
Year 6 Suki and Boden (Overall Winners for Years 5 and 6)
Our congratulations go to all who took part. There was clearly a good deal of effort and useful learning taking place over the holiday, resulting in very impressive scores. Well done!
