Grease

Senior Scholarship Drama Club's end of term presentation Wednesday 8 December 2010

Go Grease Lightning!

Due to the unusual amount of snow at the beginning of December, which led to the cast being snowed in and school being closed, the senior scholarship presentation this term took place in front of the school at lunchtime on Tuesday. The drama club had worked all term on a 20 minute version of Grease. The outcome was a fast and furious, over the top (Reduced Shakespeare company eat your heart out!) portrayal of the film. And believe it or not – it worked!

I was delighted with the performances and slick presentation of the show. From the moment the curtains opened to see Danny (Perry) and Sandy (Bella) holding hands with the rustling sea behind them and romantic music playing – the audience were laughing. The boys played their characters with great gusto and everyone managed to pull off a convincing American accent. The girls slumber party was fun as Rizo (Izzy) and the other girls (Issy, Alabama and Yasmine) reacted with appropriate disgust as Sandy  screamed at the thought of having her ears pierced!

I loved the "Grease lightning" scene and the final race at Thunder Road between lead Scorpion (Elliot) and Danny (Perry). I felt the boys got the right balance between being macho and yet endearing in their teenage ways. The finale was full of enthusiasm and as the cast all sang together in “We Go together” I don’t think anyone wanted it to end. Maybe 20 minutes for Grease is just not long enough.
