Highly entertaining fundraising event for Sussex Cricket Archivists and St Margaret's Church, Rottingdean Wednesday 24 November 2010On the morning of Saturday 20th November more than 200 people gathered in the Sports Hall at St Aubyns School in Rottingdean for a cricket-themed ‘Any Questions’ event. The panel was chaired by John Barclay, Sussex captain from the early 1980s and recently President of MCC. He was joined by John Spencer (Sussex bowler of the 1970s and now cricket coach at Brighton College), John Snow (Sussex and England fast bowler of the 1960s and 1970s), James Kirtley (Sussex and England fast bowler who retired from first class cricket this year) and Michael Jayston (distinguished actor and President of Rottingdean Cricket Club).
Rupert Webb and Rob Boddie introduce the event
The event was attended by cricket-lovers and supporters of St Margaret’s. Questions ranged from predictions of the result of the imminent Ashes series and the panel’s view of the best players they had faced in competitive cricket to discussion of the LBW law and proposed changes to the toss in cricket. Humour and anecdote abounded and the morning passed with much entertainment.
The question time was followed by lunch, but not before Father Martin Morgan on behalf of the church and Rob Boddie, Librarian of Sussex Cricket Archivists, had expressed their thanks to the organisers and to all those who had supported the event. Around £1250 was raised for each of the two organisations which will be spent on a new boiler at St Margaret’s and the fitting out of a new Museum at Hove Cricket Ground to house the archives.
