St Aubyns General Election
Conservative Party heads the poll Thursday 6 May 2010Pupils in Years 7 and 8 have been learning about the mechanics of the General Election this term as well as researching the issues and the policies of the main parties. There has been much discussion concerning this year's election amongst all of the children in school assemblies, lessons and around the school at lunch and breaktimes.
On General Election day the pupils in Years 3 to 8 had the opportunity to express their own opinions. Four Year 8 children spoke in morning Chapel as representatives of the Labour, Liberal Democrat, Conservative and Green parties. Based on their own research (but not necessarily expressing their own views) they argued passionately for their chosen party. At morning and lunchtime break the pupils who had heard them were then able to cast their votes. The Studio Theatre was set out as a polling station and polling cards were issued.
The turnout was 92% and the results were as follows:
The four hopeful candidates after the morning's husting
Conservatives 46%
Liberal Democrats 22%
Greens 17%
Labour 15%
