St Aubyns hosts Public Speaking Competition

New event for Years 7 and 8 reveals an array of talent Friday 29 January 2010

On Thursday 28th January St Aubyns hosted a Public Speaking Competition for children from local independent schools. This event, instigated by St Aubyns Headmaster, Simon Hitchings, will be repeated on an annual basis.

Teams of three pupils took part from St Aubyns, Roedean, Lewes Old Grammar School, St Christopher's, Brighton College Prep School, Hurstpierpoint Prep School and Brighton and Hove High School. Each team gave a presentation with specific roles assigned to each speaker on a topic chosen from a prescribed list. Themes included water as a disputed resource, the idea of limiting the number of flights each year per family, the place of the monarchy in our society and why so few women reach the top positions in society.

The competition was judged by Mr Oliver Ridley, Head of English at Lancing College, and Father Martin Morgan, Vicar of Rottingdean. The quality of the performances was very high throughout and it was hard to choose the winners. Third place went to St Aubyns, second to Roedean and first to Brighton College Prep.

Public Speaking Team 2010

The St Aubyns team of Phoebe Jackson, Horatio Gould and Bertie Warren chose the theme of the monarchy. They argued passionately in favour of having a monarchy and well deserved their third position.
