St Aubyns raises money for the Sudan
Highest charitable fundraising total achieved Monday 18 May 2009St Aubyns children have worked hard this year raising money for several charitable causes with a focus on a Save the Children project in southern Sudan.
Earlier in the year a non-uniform day raised £544 for Jeans for Genes as the children paid not to wear uniform and organised stalls and competitions. On Tuesday 12th May a concert was held at our local parish church, St Maragaret's, Rottingdean, as part of Christian Aid Week. An array of choirs, solo instrumentalists and instrumental groups performed beautifully. The evening raised £425.
However, the focus of our efforts this year has been a Save the Children project providing clean water and hygienic facilities for schools in southern Sudan. The collection at the Carol Service in December, a non-uniform day in February and a Sponsored Walk in April enabled us to raise £4350, the largest gift we have been able to make to a single charity. The vast majority of this money was raised through the walk at the start of this term in April, when the older children walked (or ran!) along the Undercliff Path to Brighton Marina and back, while Years 1 and 2 walked from Rottingdean to Saltdean, and our Reception and Nursery children walked around the school playing fields.
Mrs Brisker from Save the Children visited St Aubyns on Monday to explain how our money will be used.
She explained the ripple effect that clean water has on communities, families and individuals. The lack of readily accessible water and all of the disease associated with unclean water supplies result in many children not being able to attend school. A lack of education limits the prospects for children and their families and communities. We hope that our children's efforts will result in health for now and hope for the future in the lives of many children less privileged than we are.
Well done to all the children, and many thanks to parents, wider family and friends who have helped in making their efforts successful.
