Prep Schools Midwinter Swimming Gala

St Aubyns pupils hold their own in the pool Thursday 22 January 2009

On Tuesday 20th January 2009 a group children from Years 5-8 went to Lancing College to compete in the 5th annual Mid Winter Swimming Gala.  For the past few years we have been attending this event and each year we have improved and this year was no exception.  Being a small prep school who only swim in the summer term, we were proud to be able to compete and hold our own against some of the bigger and more experienced schools.

We took part in the U11 and U13 Frontcrawl and Medley Relays.  The U11 Frontcrawl Relay team consisting of Katie Mann (Y6), Theo Richenberg (Y5), Oskar Strasman (Y5) and Rebecca Bredin (Y6) came 3rd in their heat and made it through to the B Final coming 2nd overall!  The U13 Frontcrawl relay team made up of Abe Bredin (Y8), Toby Graves (Y8), Callum Hunt (Y7) and George Richenberg (Y7) came a very convincing 1st in their heat beating the likes of Brambletye and Eaton House.  They made the A Final narrowingly missing out on the medal final by just a few tenths of a second!!!  They came 2nd in their final in a super time of 2:26:5 seconds with both George and Abe making their leg under 33 seconds!

Next we had the Medley Relays and the U11 team were up again.  In this team Oskar Strasman would swim the Backstroke leg, Rebecca Bredin the Breaststroke, Theo Richenberg the Butterfly and then Bella Coxon(Y6) doing the Frontcrawl.  Another exciting heat were we came 3rd, making the B final once again.  Oskar had an amazing Backstroke leg bringing us in 1st but  unfortunately for us the likes of Windlesham House and Sompting Abbotts proved too strong so we came 3rd!  A very respectatble swim however from all those involved.  The U13 Medley team was next and we had Abe Bredin swimming the Backstroke, Charlie Klus (Y7) the Breaststroke, George Richenberg the Butterfly and Senne Porter (Y8) the Frontcrawl.  They came 2nd in their heat and made it once again to the A final were they faced tough competetion in Bodium A and Bodium B team.  They came 3rd overall but put up a great fight leading all the way only to be pipped to the post by some very strong finishers!

It was a great day out and I was very impressed with the standard of swimming by all those involved.  The mood at the end of the gala was happy and everyone was proud of their achivements in the pool.  Well done!
