Year Group Taster Days and Scholarship Assessments

Taster Days for Entry to Reception, Years 3, 4 and 7 Tuesday 13 January 2009

St Aubyns is a non-selective school with a wide ability range in our intake. We have children joining the school in September and throughout the year in every year group. We pride ourselves in helping them to settle quickly into the year group they are joining with appropriate setting and academic provision.

To help us do this we arrange Taster Days for all new children joining the school. We carry out some assessments on children joining Year 3 and above so that we are able to begin to create Individual Learning Profiles and the programmes that arise from them. For all children we observe them in the classroom and playground setting so that we have more information on their social and academic character. We will usually seek a reference from the previous school for the sake of further information. All of this helps us to know something of the boy or girl before they join us.

This year we will be holding group Taster Days for children entering Reception, Year 3, Year 4 and Year 7. If parents prefer an individual Taster Day we will be happy to arrange this. Entry to Reception

A number of children in the Nursery class at St Aubyns will be moving into the Reception class in September 2009. However, we wil be expecting to add to them children moving from other schools. We will have one or two Reception classes according to the numbers who register. The date for the Taster Day for children entering Reception is Tuesday 20th January.

Entry to Year 3 and Year 4

As children move from the Pre-Prep to the Prep at St Aubyns, Year 2 to Year 3, we expect to add a second class. We recognise that some Pre-Preps locally go to Year 3 and so we are looking to recruit children to join Year 4 as well. The Taster Day for children entering Year 3 or Year 4 is Tuesday 20th January.

Entry to Year 7

We usually have two or three children joining Year 7 at St Aubyns. Some of these come from the maintained sector. The last two years at Prep School are key years of preparation for entry exams to senior schools. St Aubyns has an enviable record in preparing children for Common Entrance and Scholarship exams. The Taster Day for children entering Year 7 is Friday 23rd January.

St Aubyns Scholarships

St Aubyns offers means-tested scholarships to children entering any year group from Year 3 to Year 7. Awards are offered to children showing excellence in academic assessments or in music, the performing arts, art or sport. The Academic Scholarship assessments will be held on Monday 19th January. The other scholarship assessments will be held on Thursday 22nd January. Children who wish to combine scholarship assessments with a Taster Day for entry to Year 3, 4 or 7 may do so.
