Unbeaten 1st XI Football Season
Season completed with a tour to Cambridge Tuesday 9 December 2008
St Aubyns 1st XI Football team completed an unbeaten season with a trip to Cambridge and a victory against King's College School, Cambridge by 3 goals to 2.
The First XI's largest victory was a 14-0 defeat of Ardingly, but there were also victories against St Christopher's, Hurstpierpoint, Copthorne, Tavistock and Summerhill, Lancing Prep, Dorset House, Brambletye, St Ronan's, Stoke Brunswick, and Sompting Abbots. A 2-2 draw against Brighton College Prep was the only thing preventing a 100% success rate. The final statistics for the season were:
Played 13, Won 12, Drew 1, Goals for 70, Goals against 14.
Well done to the 1st XI on a great football season and well done to everyone but especially to the boys who received their colours: Nick Wright, Saviours Ndau, Toby Graves, Oli Graves (the captain) and Charlie Marshall. A special well done to Toby and Oli Graves who were also selected for the south-east regional team.
Here are the reflections of one member of the squad on the trip to Cambridge which completed this memorable season:
"The tour started at 2:30pm leaving our beloved school to go to King's College School, Cambridge. We were all very excited about what was approaching and what we would see, in the school, city centre and the Hawks Club. The journey took us four hours. When we arrived at the school we took our bags upstairs and went down for supper which was ribs and pitta bread, a very nice meal from a nice chef. When we had finished our meal we went outside and played on the Astroturf for a little over an hour which was great fun and meant we could get rid of all our energy that had been stored for a long while.
On the morning of our match we had a walk into town and to get there we walked through some of the colleges and we saw some really beautiful things like King's College Chapel, the river that ran under the bridge with a swan swimming gracefully through the water, and the old buildings in the city. In the shops we spent our money on things which would remind us of Cambridg. We met up with a teacher from King's, Mr Ashworth who guided us round the Hawks Club and told us what various rooms were used for and that Mr Macmillan was not a member of the Hawks Club just for rugby but also for boxing. When we arrived back at the school we got our boots on and got ready to play with a good attitude.
We started off the match well with Charlie Marshall scoring a good goal and then another, and then a goal from Saviours Ndau. Mr Macmillan put on George Taylor for Alfie Robbie in goal, but George got caught unluckily when the ball got struck from the halfway line and he was off his line and it soared in, and then they got another goal to make the final score 3-2. Not great performances from the boys but a good outcome at least. We got changed into home clothes and went to see a rugby game; it was Cambridge against Aberavon and it was a good game with Cambridge winning in the end. When it was time to leave the minibus wouldn’t start but it did eventually and we got back at 8:30pm.
Well done the 1st XI on a great football season. A big thank you to Mr Macmillan for the whole season. " (Written by George Taylor)
