The Wizard of Oz
Junior Play a great success Thursday 4 December 2008
“We’re off to see the Wizard…” and what a wonderful Wizard it was!
The opening night of the two-night run was definitely one to remember. The children had been rehearsing all term and were excited and ready to perform.
From the opening, the children took control of the stage and were engaging and entertaining. The two narrators spoke clearly and held our attention throughout. There were some fantastic performances during the evening: Olivia gave a fun and dynamic performance as Miss Gulch. The Munchkins were cute and looked delicious with their hair tied up and glitter on their faces! Suki played a stern and scary Wicked Witch. She looked superb with professional make up and is definitely one to be watching as she does more Drama at the school. The Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion gave superb performances and were extremely focused and convincing at all times. A credit to the school! Eloise made a lovely Wizard and looked charming in her blue suit, and the Flying Monkeys, the Doorman and the Farmhands all gave of their best and helped to make the show a collaborative success.
The star of the show, however, was undoubtedly Emilia who played a confident and charming Dorothy. She performed with grace and poise and produced a few tears in the audience as she sang “Somewhere over the Rainbow”. She had obviously worked very hard learning her lines and was able to combat her stage fright on the night to give the most heart-warming performance. Well done!
I left the theatre feeling thoroughly entertained. It was a slick, well-staged and stunning performance of “The Wizard of Oz”. Having live music helped the show to come alive, so well done to Miss Behdad. The costumes and make-up were also superb and enabled the cast to really get into character. All of this was reflective of the hard work and dedication of the children’s teachers, Miss Benwell, Mrs Sykens and Mrs Sierra. A big “congratulations” to you all. It was a truly magical and uplifting show. I can’t wait for next year’s already!
