Henry Allingham visits St Aubyns
Oldest man in Britain speaks to St Aubyns pupils Monday 15 September 2008On Friday 12th September St Aubyns was privileged to welcome Henry Allingham, the oldest living Briton and World War 1 veteran. Mr Allingham answered questions from two groups of pupils, Years 1 to 4 before lunch, and Years 5 to 8 after lunch. In between he had lunch with a group of Year 3 children.
The sessions were appropriately held in the school's Memorial Chapel, built in 1912 and displaying the names of the Old Boys of the school who died in the two World Wars.
The children asked questions on a range of subjects from Henry Allingham's experiences of the First World War to the details of his childhood. His love of life and of knowledge were evident throughout his visit. Mr Allingham was clearly moved to meet a pupil 100 years to the day younger than he. He was passionate in encouraging the children to be good and to make the most of life. Teachers were touched to be reminded that these children are 'the nation of the future'.
