Blustering Winds and Bags of Goals at St Aubyns!

A great start to the season for the St Aubyns soccer superstars Thursday 11 September 2008

A great start to the season for the St Aubyns soccer superstars led by Oli Graves and vice-captained by Nick Wright. The First Team got off to an inauspicious start against a very large team from St.Christopher’s who looked very much like rugby players! Despite having the vast majority of possession in the first half we went down 1-0 after a speculative shot by the opposition caught our goalkeeper off his line. During the first half we often gave away possession too cheaply with long balls and there was a general reluctance among the senior players to take our opponents on.

During the second half there was a renewed vigour about the whole team! Our defence marked more tightly, led by Oli ‘the Rock’ Graves. With Frank ‘the Destroyer’ Coxon playing a defensive midfield role, we started to control the supply of possession. Saviours 'Twinkle toes' Ndau scored for us from a rebound and from that juncture we looked like scoring at every turn. Toby ‘Shoot on sight’ Graves won the man of the match award.  He peppered the six foot plus goalkeeper with ferocious thunderbolts from outside the penalty box, scoring twice as St Aubyns won 3-1.

If it had not been for a superb goalkeeping display from the opposition keeper it could well have been many more. This week we are working on positional play and winning the ball in the air which we have targeted as areas for improvement.
