History of the School
Late 18th century: local vicar, T.R. Hooker, started a school based at Rottingdean vicarage.
Beginning of 19th century: Mr Hooker started to use 76 High Street as an annexe for his school. This building is an early nineteenth century construction and is now Grade 2 Listed. The school changed hands several times being called Field House School from the 1860s through to the early 1880s. Briefly Rottingdean School was housed here before the Mason brothers moved their school to a new site at the northern end of the village.
1895: C.E.F. Stanford opens St Aubyns School at 76 High Street; all boys, all boarding.
1919: R.C.V. Lang becomes Headmaster.
1940: W.H.Gervis becomes Headmaster.
1940-45: School evacuated to Voelas, near Pentrefoelas in North Wales, home of the Wynne Finch family, for the duration of WW2.
1969: St Aubyns becomes a charitable trust.
1974: J.A.L.James becomes Headmaster.
1983: Sports Hall and Squash Court built.
1987: New classrooms built around the Courtyard.
1995: Pre-Prep opened.
1996: School became co-educational.
1998: A.G.Gobat becomes Headmaster.
1999: 80-seat Performing Arts Studio opened.
2000: New ICT room opened with 22 linked PCs.
2001: New Library opened.
2002: Nursery started.
2007: S.L.Hitchings becomes Headmaster.
