Admissions
St Aubyns is a non-selective school and we welcome children of a wide ability range. Individual Learning Profiles for all children in Years 3 to 8 enable us to help the least able to move on to appropriate senior schools and the most able to win academic scholarships.
Our main points of entry are Nursery, Reception, Year 3, Year 4 and Year 7. However, we have families joining all year groups and joining the school throughout the year as circumstances lead them to the Brighton area and to St Aubyns. We welcome pupils from overseas, although it should be noted that we offer only weekly-boarding. Parents of overseas children will need to have arrangements for a guardian to look after their children at the weekends. We have a UK Border Agency A-rating as a Sponsor for visa applicants looking for schooling in the UK.
Children interested in joining the school will be invited for a Taster Day so that they can have a feel for the school and we can see how they interact with other children and in the classroom. We want to begin to compile their Individual Learning Profile as soon as possible.
In the Nursery the Taster Day will involve spending time in the class and observation by the teacher. In the rest of the Pre-Prep observation will be accompanied by an informal assessment by the Head of Learning Plus. Children joining the Prep department will have formal assessments during their Taster Day to give us more information to support and challenge children appropriately.
Normally these Taster Days will be in the academic year prior to September when the child will start. Children start in Reception if they will be already four years old in September. We hold some joint year group Taster Days in January for children joining Reception, Year 3, Year 4 and Year 7 which can be in addition to a child coming for an individual Taster Day if parents wish.
Please contact Mrs Caroline Hitchings (Registrar) on 01273 302170 or by email at chi@staubynsschoolbrighton.co.uk to arrange a visit to the school or a Taster Day, or to discuss any matters concerning your child joining St Aubyns.
Nursery Admissions
The school is registered as part of the Early Years' Grant scheme with the local authority. This means that parents are able to benefit from 12.5 hours of free Nursery Education (15 hours from September 2010). The grant is also claimable in Reception while a child is still four years old.
From April 2010 the school policy will be that parents will be able to choose to book their children for between one to five sessions (the free entitlement) or for a full-time place. In September the free entitlement will be for up to six sessions. The school limits the number of children who are using only the free entitlement to 12 pupils.
Enquiries about the Early Years Grant should be made to Mr Graeme Miles (Bursar) on 01273 309314.
