ARTS EXPRESS

Arts Express is an integrated creative Arts Programme. The underlying philosophy is that every child in the school should see the Arts as a means of learning and should have the confidence to express themselves artistically.

Every child in St Aubyns from Reception to Year 8 takes part in two Arts Express days per year. There is an umbrella theme throughout the year which will enable the Art, Drama, Music and Dance departments to work together to give the children practical experience of these subjects. 2009 – 2010
Literary Classics


Autumn Term
Pre-Prep – Day 1
Theatre visit to see “Lazy Town” at the Theatre Royal Brighton – with links to Pirates and Pirate stories in books. 

Prep School – Years 6 -8
Treasure Island” day
With dressing up and making up as Pirates, learning and singing Pirate songs, related art work and acting out the story.

Spring Term
Prep School – Years 3 - 8
A whole school visit to see “Oliver” in the West End.

Summer Term
Pre-Prep Day 2
Beatrix Potter Day.

Australia Day 1

Painting in the aboriginal style


-    An Aborigine elder told stories of his people and taught some principles of aboriginal art, and a didgeridoo player showed the children how to play and linked the didgeridoo with stories of Australian animals

•     Brazilian CARNIVAL day – Years 3 - 8
The whole prep school divided into 4 groups and each group had workshops on;
- Samba dance
- Carnival Music
- making costumes with “Wishworks”
- Carnival art with “Same Sky” making flags

Now and Then


Autumn Term
•    The whole Prep School went to see The Sound of Music in the West End.

Spring Term
•    WW2 Evacuee Day – Years 6 -8
o    The children had a talk by a visitor who had been a child in the time of the war, she talked about war time and being an evacuee.
o    There was a Jive Dance workshop
o    A WW2 art workshop with image of War – led by Madhu McCrystal
o    Rainbow Theatre came for the afternoon to lead an evacuee Drama Workshop.

Summer Term
•    Knights, Maidens and Dragons Day – Pre-Prep
o    Puppet show
o    Storytelling
o    Art with their teachers in the classrooms making Dragons and shields!

•    Tudor Day – Prep – Years 3 -5
o    Drama with Pip Henderson – acting out parts of a story going back in time to Tudor times – with a performance at the end of the day
o    SAME SKY art – the children made a huge Tudor Galleon
o    Music with Anthony Purnell – Tudor instruments and some dancing   
             
•    Prehistoric Day – Pre-Prep
