PERSONAL, SOCIAL, HEALTH EDUCATION

In Years 3 – 6 each child has 2 X 35 minute lessons per fortnight.  In addition to this, daily form tutor periods deal with issues, as they arise, during the week as do individuals and groups leading our regular Chapel services. In Years 7 and 8 the subject is dealt with in Global Eye lessons.

The Year 8 leavers also have a comprehensive Leavers’ Programme during their last 3 weeks with us.  During this programme, amongst other things, they spend a week at Outward Bound, Ullswater, they have talks by the local police liaison officer, they take a first aid course provided by St John’s Ambulance, they have a drugs awareness lecture, visit the local town hall and meet the mayor, and much more.

Formulating aims for PSHE is essential to clarifying content and procedures.  However, no one set of aims can take full account of the individuality of each boy or girl.

We aim to support the development of certain personal qualities and attitudes among all pupils:

  • Independence of mind
  • Self-reliance, self-discipline and self-respect and a commitment to remain healthy
  • An enterprising and persistent approach to tasks and challenges
  • Consideration for others including when developing and involved in close relationships
  • A sense of fairness, together with respect for the processes of law and for the legal rights of others
  • Respect for ways of life, opinions and ideas different from one’s own, provided they are based on consideration for others
  • Readiness to act on behalf of the legitimate interests of others who cannot effectively act for themselves
  • A commitment to promoting the well being of the community through democratic means
  • Concern for the conservation of the natural world, and for the physical, including the built, environment.

SCHEME OF WORK

Each group has exposure to the themes which have been identified as ‘essential’ parts of the whole curriculum.  These themes are:

1. SELF AWARENESS/CAREERS

These concentrate on developing pupils’ self-knowledge and their abilities to understand situations, to manage their feelings and to handle their relationships.

2. HEALTH EDUCATION

These units are designed to complement the work on health education which takes place elsewhere in the curriculum – PE and Science are prime examples of subjects where this happens as well as those areas of everyday school life where all sorts of subjects are discussed.

3. ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

Science and Geography are obviously subjects where work is done on environmental education and the work done in PSHE fits alongside these.

4. EDUCATION FOR CITIZENSHIP

Topics ranging from the work of central and local government to work designed to promote disability awareness, the needs of elderly people etc.  All these topics relate to living in the wider community.

5. EDUCATION FOR ECONOMIC AND INDUSTRIAL UNDERSTANDING

This theme deals with aspects of business, commerce and consumer affairs.
