INDIVIDUAL LEARNING

St Aubyns operates a whole-school programme designed to meet individual learning needs for every pupil. With the exception of individual tuition for some children, charged separately per session, the Individual Learning Programme is provided as part of every child’s education at St Aubyns.  Our commitment is to ensure that all of our pupils are able to maximise their potential abilities and talents. In all cases, our aim is to enable a confident and successful learning experience.

The Individual Learning Programme includes:

  • Initial screening and assessment prior to entry, from which we develop an Individual Learning Plan for all pupils.
  • Ongoing development of these learning plans, in consultation with all teaching and support staff.
  • Tracking of progress over each year, with regular monitoring of performance levels by observation and assessments, formal and informal.
  • Differentiated teaching opportunities based on different learning needs.
  • Additional assistance in the classroom to extend and enrich these opportunities.
  • Individual tuition to target specific needs and abilities - these needs identified through observation and diagnostic assessment.
  • Close liaison with parents, providing regular reviews of progress.

Individual tuition is provided by trained specialists who offer encouragement, support and a positive impetus to each child’s learning.  These lessons are known as Learning Plus lessons, We are experienced in teaching children with a wide range of specific learning needs, such as dyslexia and dyspraxia, and those for whom English is an additional language.  Similarly, we can provide a short-term boost for those whose progress may have temporarily ‘stalled’, or for those whose exceptional abilities may call for customised tuition. The Headmaster also meets with an Academic Extension group in each of Years 5, 6 and 7 in order to stimulate further the learning of the most able pupils.
